The first lesson is usually longer. It will take between 45 to an hour for you to be able to share what brings you to the Technique. A normal lesson will take 45 minutes.
No. Exercises are not a part of the Alexander Technique learning. However, you might benefit from lying down in a semi-supine position or using wall work after your Teacher explains to you how it works. All those are positions where you give yourself time to return to a quieter place, where you can observe but not interfere or change whatever happens next.
I would need 24 hours’ notice if you decide to cancel your session. If you cancel in less than 24 hours’ notice, I will need to charge you for the lesson.
There are some measures in place by the Government Guidelines. If you are showing symptoms of COVID-19, please call and cancel the appointment. You will be required to wear a face mask at all times, from the moment you arrive until you leave the premises. Please bring one with you. You will be required to use hand sanitisers upon arrival and departure. Sanitisers are available in the waiting room, in the teaching room, and the toilet.
It varies from person to person. People come to sessions for different reasons and under different conditions and is difficult to tell. However, a minimum of 6 lessons is normally needed for a person to start experiencing the benefits of the Technique.
Alexander Technique helps people to improve their posture and alleviate pains related to backs, shoulders, necks, and heads. But is not only about that. Alexander helps at the psycho-physical level which means that it works on your entire self. It is a holistic approach that sees the whole of ourselves rather than a specific part of our bodies that needs to be treated. While addressing the psycho-physical aspect the specific pain will tend disappear as you work on yourself.
Introduction classes are very useful and a good way to intellectually understand the Technique. However, the real work is done when the pupil experiences one to one sessions. This is because the Teacher will have the opportunity to address the student’s habits and work from a personalised perspective.
Alexander Technique is not about treating people or doing any sort of exercises. During a lesson, the pupil will take an active part in all the processes, as that is when the learning process starts. The main objective is for the pupil to learn how he/she reacts habitually to life and learn how to unlearn those habits of excess tension that harms them in the first place.
